Sewage treatment

Every community should have a way of disposing of sewage so that people, animals and flies cannot touch it. This is called a sewage system.

There are different types of sewage systems which can be described as on-site systems and sewage or effluent systems. An on-site system is one which treats the sewage in a septic tank so that most of the sewage becomes effluent and is disposed of in an area close to the house or buildings. An example of an on-site disposal system consists of a septic tank and leach drains.

A sewage or wastewater system disposes of the effluent from a community at a central place usually called a sewage lagoon or effluent pond. The sewage can be treated: in a septic tank at each building just before the lagoon in a large septic tank or macerator system, or in the lagoon itself 8.

The effluent from the tank is then disposed of through effluent disposal drains often referred to as leach or French drains. Both of these methods of disposing of liquid waste are on-site disposal systems. They must be installed and maintained properly. In these systems, the effluent is soaked into the surrounding soil.

Some soils don't allow good soakage such as clay or similar soils; if there are any problems with this disposal system a local government EHO should be consulted to talk about the problem.

On-site disposal systems cannot be installed in all situations. For example, they cannot be installed: in areas that flood regularly in areas that have a high water table that is, where the underground water is close to the surface where the amount of wastewater to be disposed of is large near to drinking water supplies 8. These pipes serve all the houses and other buildings in the community. The sewage may be either be treated in septic tanks at the houses or buildings or at the lagoon.

There are no leach or French drains. Top of Page 8. There are three types of full sewage system: The sewage enters the lagoon without treatment The sewage goes through a series of cutting blades which help break up the solid matter before it enters the lagoon.

These blades are called macerators. The sewage may be treated in a large septic tank just before it enters the lagoon. Comments will be used to improve web content and will not be responded to. Thank you for taking the time to provide feedback. It will be used to make improvements to this website.

A Visit to a Wastewater Treatment Plant

The residue that accumulates in sewage treatment plants is called sludge or biosolids. Sewage sludge is the solid, semisolid, or slurry residual material that is produced as a by-product of wastewater treatment processes. This residue is commonly classified as primary and secondary sludge. Primary sludge is generated from chemical precipitation , sedimentation, and other primary processes, whereas secondary sludge is the activated waste biomass resulting from biological treatments. Some sewage plants also receive septage or septic tank solids from household on-site wastewater treatment systems.

It is vital to keep a good sewage system in order to efficiently maintain a clean, safe and hygienic working environment. We have a comprehensive range of sewage treatment plants and septic tanks which are ideal for both domestic and commercial environments. All our sewage treatment options comply with current regulations and can cover sewage disposal, rainwater collection, pumping stations and bypass separation. Our sewage treatments are suitable for domestic residences; capable of dealing with up to 6 people. Septic tanks run up to gallons and are the most straightforward cost-effective solution to domestic sewage disposal.

Water Q&A: Where does our home wastewater go?

Wastewater or waste water is any water that has been affected by human use. Wastewater is "used water from any combination of domestic, industrial, commercial or agricultural activities, surface runoff or stormwater , and any sewer inflow or sewer infiltration". The characteristics of wastewater vary depending on the source. Types of wastewater include: domestic wastewater from households, municipal wastewater from communities also called sewage and industrial wastewater.

A paragraph 46 exemption allows the recovery and storage of waste from within the curtilage of a water treatment works and waste from within the curtilage of a sewage treatment works. The maximum quantity of wastes permitted to be accepted in any period of twelve months from the preparation of water intended for human consumption or water from industrial use at a Water Treatment Works, must not exceed 10, cubic metres.

Wastewater treatment 3. Irrigation with wastewater is both disposal and utilization and indeed is an effective form of wastewater disposal as in slow-rate land treatment. However, some degree of treatment must normally be provided to raw municipal wastewater before it can be used for agricultural or landscape irrigation or for aquaculture. The quality of treated effluent used in agriculture has a great influence on the operation and performance of the wastewater-soil-plant or aquaculture system. In the case of irrigation, the required quality of effluent will depend on the crop or crops to be irrigated, the soil conditions and the system of effluent distribution adopted. Through crop restriction and selection of irrigation systems which minimize health risk, the degree of pre-application wastewater treatment can be reduced. A similar approach is not feasible in aquaculture systems and more reliance will have to be placed on control through wastewater treatment.

A wastewater treatment plant is a facility in which a combination of various . the water into an underground aquifer where the drinking water supply is stored.

On-site wastewater reuse can reduce water use in both urban and rural households. At present, most homes use potable drinkable water for practically everything in the house and garden. The articles Reducing water demand, Rainwater and Outdoor water use also have information on reducing potable water use.

Wastewater reuse

Sewage treatment is the process of removing contaminants from municipal wastewater , containing mainly household sewage plus some industrial wastewater. Physical, chemical, and biological processes are used to remove contaminants and produce treated wastewater or treated effluent that is safe enough for release into the environment. A by-product of sewage treatment is a semi-solid waste or slurry, called sewage sludge. The sludge has to undergo further treatment before being suitable for disposal or application to land.
