The history of glass goes back to antiquity. It is known that in Egypt and Mesopotamia they knew how to do it already years ago. It is likely that glass began to be made nevertheless later than the first ceramic products, since its production required higher temperatures than for firing clay. If only clay was enough for the simplest ceramic products, then at least three components are needed in the glass composition. Glass products, like ceramics, are practically not exposed to atmospheric influences and are well preserved even under a layer of earth.

Glass-ceramics are polycrystalline materials of fine microstructure that are produced by the controlled crystallisation devitrification of a glass. Numerous silicate based wastes, such as coal combustion ash, slag from steel production, fly ash and filter dusts from waste incinerators, mud from metal hydrometallurgy, different types of sludge as well as glass cullet or mixtures of them have been considered for the production of glass-ceramics.

The main finishing materials in modern construction include finishing mortars and concretes ; natural and artificial masonry materials ; decorative ceramics ; materials and items made from wood, paper, glass, plastic, and metals; and paints and varnishes. Finishing materials are usually designed for interior or exterior finishing ; some materials are used for both for example, natural decorative stone, ceramic materials, and architectural glass. A special group consists of materials and items for covering floors , which must meet a number of specific requirements negligible wear , high impact strength, and so on. Finishing materials also include acoustic materials , which are used simultaneously as sound-absorbing coatings and as a decorative finish for the interiors of theaters, concert halls, and motion-picture theaters.

A process for producing feldspathic sanitary ware and the end product are disclosed in which a fluxing amount of a glass frit is used in the ceramic slip used to cast the sanitary ware. The frit contains both deflocculent oxides and flocculent alkaline earths which are leachable from the frit when it is placed in the ceramic slip. The deflocculent oxides counterbalance the effect of the flocculent alkaline earths to the extent they are respectively leached from the frit upon dispersal in a ceramic slip and maintain the slip at a workable viscosity.
